I suppose I should really update here, as I haven't in a while. Just doing the rounds of everyone's blogs, and ran across yet another quiz from the Quiz Master. :) BTW, I tried to go to another quiz link you had there J, the Britney one, and boy it tried to download about five different things within only 3 seconds of being on the site. Maybe that is why your computer got upset...but I hope not. I assume it is working again now...at least, I hope for you that it is. :) Still working on the drafts...thanks for your comments. :)

This was an interesting quiz. Didn't ask things that I was expecting it to ask.

In other news, I was watching Bleu again, this time with no subtitles, as I was watching it with my Quebecois roommate. She had her sister and boyfriend here for the weekend, and it was a great chance for me to practice my French. I have been watching the Blanche series from the local library in French with no subtitles, and I can usually get by understanding what they are saying. It helps that I watched it in English when it was on TV a few years ago, and so I already knew the basic plot. I thought it would be that easy with Bleu, as I have watched it several times too, but there are times when I don't remember what they were saying, even if I could guess. So, I guess it is still good practice for me. I get more out of that movie every time I watch, even more than just watching it in French this time. :) Well, my weekend of fun is over. Time to hit the books again. I have to be up for an appointment tomorrow, so I will go to bed at a reasonable hour this evening...imagine that. :)

Friday, July 04, 2003

It has been a movie kind of day. Yesterday I went to the library to get out some free movies. To my delight and surprise they had a recent movie, Enigma, which I have been wanting to watch. It is still a new release at the video store. Bonus. So, I watched that one, and one called Sweet and Lowdown, about Emitt Ray, a jazz guitar player in the 1930's. Earlier today I watched a documentary about Citizan Kane. I once watched about half of the movie several years back when I was babysitting one night, but they came home before it was finished, such is my luck. So, now I may finally watch the whole thing. Worse yet, there are two good movies at the Screening Room this week. Ah well, a bit of a change of pace before I hit the books hard again for my next chapter. :) More thoughts later...most likely on my livejournal. :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!!! So far it has been a fantastic Canada Day. It may seem strange, but right now I have to head out for a dentist appointment. But, since this morning I have been to the Waterloo Farmer's Market, bought fresh cherries and fresh strawberries....ymmmm, and cheese curds, AND the best morning long orgasm I have ever bought, for only 50 cents, a tiny cone of *maple taffee*. YMMMMMMMM!! So, I hope the dentist doesn't notice. :) Tonight it is out for a whole bunch of fireworks, and fun. We even when and took pictures of the teenage Canada geese who are still downy, but are looking quite big. Have a great day all you Canadians out there!!

Yet another hot and beautiful day here in Kingston. Not much good for getting work done, but one can't have everything I suppose. Thus far it has been cool enough at night to keep the place fairly good during the day. I sincerely hope this continues. With my roomates away I have the place all to myself, which is great for piano playing at any hour of the day or night that I am inspired. I can also work anywhere in the house free from interuption. But, I think that everyone is supposed to be back tomorrow, so I suppose I should enjoy the quite while I have it, and look forward to the company when they return.

I hate that Blogger has no commenting. So, I will comment on something I read on Inertiaville, and send you to go read about it there.
Comment to entry on Inertiaville entry titled "Interlude, with Radiohead":
I am wondering if the Radiohead disc you are describing is the one my sister played for me recently. One of the track titles sounds familiar, so I think so. I was personally highly impressed with the album, sounded very cool. I am not nearly as familiar with a lot of their previous stuff, as you seem to be, but I think that they are a band I could get into listening to. Since you know the stuff better, is there a good starter album you would recommend? I suppose I could ask my sister that too...eh, more opinions the better. :)

Went to see "The Good Theif" at the Screening Room. It was an alright movie. I went with my French Canadian roomy, and she found it annoying that they all had French accents. :) It was an interesting combination of so many movies. There was cop chasing the bad guy, whom he really secretly likes and wants to help stay out of trouble, as in Tom Hanks character from "Catch Me if You Can". There was the Heist scene, reminiscent of "Sexy Beast". (A good one, Ben Kingsley is funny). And, the finaly scene was reminiscent of Rainman, when they go out and buy new suits, and head off to win big at the casino. So, just like a Picasoo I guess, lots of stealing from other sources. (If you watch the movie, you will get it).
For those of you not familiar with Blogger, the behind the scenes stuff has all changed, and I am not sure if it was for the better. Of course the familiar is always nicer. I am sure I will get used to this soon enough. Everything changes, everthing stays the same. Back to the grindstone I suppose.
Hey, don't forget to give me comments on my livejournal, even if you can't leave them here. Link is to the side. :)

What Video Game Character Are You? I am Mario.I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. What Video Game Character Are You?

Just another quiz. I hope that some people out there might get a kick out of memories of old video games....you know who you are. :)
Back at the grind now. Woke up this morning to a typical grey rainy day in Kingston. Very hard to get out of bed on mornings like these. Rainy days are best for just staying in bed all day and moving in and out of dream states. That is the closest I come to tripping I guess. :) Sadly, I had to be up at some ungodly hour, (ie, before 11am) for a meeting. But, it got me up so now I should take advantage and do some work, right? Sure. I have been checking out Starhawk's page for my school work, and it looks cool. The best part is that she will be in Australia when I am there. Maybe I can see her in person...cool. Not that I am some drooling fan, but it is interesting to see people in person that you have been reading about and writing about (critisizing) for months. It would be en experience I am sure. I wonder if they will sell t-shirts, like at rock concerts. Maybe I could get her to sign a bood. Nah, she is too drained already I am sure. I could never keep up with all the stuff she does. I would drain out in no time. Speaking of which...back to the books. :)

Tuesday, June 10, 2003

Ok. I have been silent long enough. Time for some updating.
I sincerely hope that my long days of running about the country are over for a little while. I would really like to stay in one place longer than say, four or five days in a row. It would be nice. Not to say that I didn't enjoy all the fun my many travels have brought me, or that I didn't enjoy the company of the many people I saw on my trips; old friends and new, strangers with good conversations, family, my lover, all those wonderful people. But, now I need to stay put for a while. Maybe people will come and visit me. :)
I went to see 2001: A Space Odyssey on the weekend, on the big screen. The Princess was playing it, for those of us who were too young to see it on the big screen when it was originally released. Can't say that it has aged all that well, but I think that AI made a whole lot more sense to me after I watched it. More on that in my LiveJournal whenever I get a chance to write some more. Also took in some of the Animatrix this weekend. Too much violence of Man vs. Machine. However, I must say, The Animatrix was much more graphic than I was expecting. Yes, I know it was depicting war, but there is still a notion of gratuitous violence for those of us who are watching this as a form of entertainment, not as a documentary or in a war crimes trial or something. IMHO. More on this later too perhaps. But first, I would like to go and read outside in the nice weather, now that it has finally arrived.

Ok. Now that that is all cleared up, and everyone in the house knows that BMW is a German company, things are back to normal. I think I should go test out my phone to make sure it is really working. Then I have school work to do. Yah. I have been reading...(as Sumaarsita justifies her day to herself) but not writing as much as I would like. I have started to take up some pleasure reading, alongside my scholarly reading. We will see how long that lasts.
The phones in this place have been very strange the past two days. So, happy news, two men have arrived to fix it. Hurray! It is really hard to explain just what was going on, but my line and the other line in the house seemed to be interconnected. It was very strange to say the least. However, now I must go and look up what BMW stands for to settle an argument. Back later...:)
Here is a little something to get my blog going again, now that I am back from my travels across Eastern Canada. More content later...really.

Well, I would do a dance of joy to celebrate my completion of the Winter term work, leaving just the big monster of a paper which should take me all summer to write. But, I have been up for going on 36 hours now, and while I did catch a couple winks on the train, and a bit on the bus, the seats and the bun in my hair conspired to keep me very uncomfortable. But, here is my little "Hurray" until I have caught up on my sleep. I do not intend to get out of bed tomorrow except to eat and pee. So, off to bed, and the best part, I have someone warm to snuggle up to. :)
Wow, another late night. The question is, will I make it through my paper before my energy runs out. Haven't resorted to caffine yet. Just a little stretch break, and some really early morning oatmeal. Hope I didn't wake up the roomies with that one. It is quiet on the stove. I have hit on something big, something good, which if I actually get it all on paper may well push the length of my paper significantly closer to the aim of 20 pages. You have no idea the difference between 15 and 20 pages, especially at this hour. Well, must be back at it. By the time anyone reads this, my fate will be determined. (A chill up my spine...oooo).

Currently Listening--Zadok the Priest by Handel (If that doesn't keep you up, don't know much that will). :)
Uh oh, here comes "Jesus Joy of Man's Desiring...sure to put me to sleep..quick..what comes next?!
Even worse, "Oh for the Wings of a Dove" Have any of you seen a movie with Sally Field called Sybil? If so then you will know what I am talking about. If not, be grateful you can still enjoy that song.

Wednesday, May 14, 2003

Guess I am the only crazy up at this hour. Since my paper is not really close to being done, but has a good skeleton outline and the beginnings of a fleshy draft, I think I may head off to bed with my creation half finished. (I fancy myself Dr. Frankenstein in my paper writing...I should be so grand).

Just to confirm that Fark is really just a glorified porno site, read all the comments responding to this entry, and note the many MANY complaints at the 'misuse' of the 'Boobies' tag, which is apparently *supposed* to indicate wack off material. Heaven forbid anyone should post anything mildly creative or intelligent with such a tag on it. Boobies are not for offering personal reflections on, or for experiencing from the point of view of a subject. No, they are objects for oggling at and beating off to, don't ya know.
So all you people who think you are being respectable surfing Fark, I question your decency and your taste.

Wow! Who would have guessed. Hey, I wonder, how many Catholics are they down in the USA? What about in Britain? Just wondering how we compare. Guess we have fewer Jedi's at least. But I am confused. Where is everyone out there? Enjoying the nice weather rather than blogging I am sure. Well, I was outside too, set up a chair in the backyard to do some reading, which was a nice change from my tiny 'office' all winter. I hope to read outside quite a lot this summer, especially since all the libraries close so early in the day. Grrr. Well, at some point I suppose I should make an effort to start getting up before 11:30, but hey, why should I do that? Talking up the period movies with B and J down at the Goat. Good times. It is scary to realize just how many period movies I have watched, and just how much of a movie buff I really am. Part of me says, I am just feeding into the culture of escapism and consumerism and celebrity by watching all these movies. Part of me says it is about art, and at the same time popular culture. (Am I trying to have high tastes and be Marxist at the same time? I don't know) Speaking of which, I was thinking about a movie I watched a long time ago, Burnt By The Sun, about Russia, and, of course, communism. The movie I saw tonight was about communism, somewhat. The best line of the movie was when Brendan Fraser's character says, "Americans are not colonialists". The theatre laughed, in the way you swallow a laugh because it wasn't meant to be funny. Yah. Off to bed for me.

Wednesday, May 07, 2003

Hey Jeremy, thanks for the info on Wolverine there. Good to know. It just seemed kind of fishy to me that the woman with the metal fingernails also had the same self-healing power that wolverine had, which suggested to me that that might have been created too. I really should read one of these comic books. They look cool. :)
In other news, my readings for my paper are depressing the hell out of me. I should really stop writing my rants on the internet, so I will attempt to spare you all for a little while. Hmm. Perhaps I can journal them instead. I am off to read more depressing stuff at the library. Yah!

Tuesday, May 06, 2003

So, as some of you may have noticed, I went to see the new X-Men movie this weekend. I am not usually one to care about openning weekends, but you know. Stand up and be counted in the opening weekend money grab statistics, why not. The movie itself was pretty good. With all those great actors and actresses, it would have to work hard not to be at least decent. I personally wish they could get that cast together for a fantastic drama. Maybe that much talent has to be sublimated into something less demanding so they don't burn up the screen.
I was particularly struck by the section where we finally see the lab in which Wolverine was created. It reminded me so much of the scene in Frankenstein. There is a vat of strange liquid, which is at least metaphorically, if not literally ambionic fluid. From this emerges the creation of the mad scientist, the monster, who then screeming with his new found force, and with legs wabbly as a newborn fawn, emerges naked and dripping, and runs away from his master/creator. Looked very similar to me. All this also made me wonder, was Wolverine really a Mutant, or was he created from a human into a 'Mutant'? I have never read the comic books, so those of you who have, and know the answer, please don't say I am dumb. If you know, please fill me in.
But the movie itself completely aside, the thing that really bothered me about the movie was all the ads!! I mean, even at a 'cheap' matinee, they charged me $8 to get into the movie (what used to be full price), and then subjected me to watching a good 15 or more minutes of ads, many of which were not even for up coming movies. Now, I do expect to have to watch one or two upcoming movies. However, all the car ads, pop ads, *juice* ads?! What is going on here. There was one that bothered me especially. It was for FiveAlive, and it featured a teenage boy dancing with a carton of juice while behind him tourist posters of different attractions across Canada flash. This boy was wearing a blue t-shirt with a White star on it. Now, considering the patriotic nature of the pictures in the backgroud, one would expect that perhaps he would be wearing a RED shirt, if not one with a nice big MAPLE LEAF on it. Are they trying to subtly imply that America is going to take over Canada, if not by force, then culturally? Hmmm...
The other highly disconcerting thing is that Aberfoyle Springs, a source for Canadian bottled spring water is now under the control of Nestle, that company of ill repute!! What is the world coming too? Are we just going to hand over controll of ALL our natural resources and cultural media to the Americans without so much as a "Hey, wait a second there..."?!

Ok, rant over for now....

We interupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you a breaking News Story...
Hi ho. Kermit the Frog here with Seseame Street News. We have just heard that...

They have made a movie of Leonard Cohen's first (autobiographical) novel "The Favourite Game"! I hope it comes to Kingston soon. We should all go to see it, even though the reviews don't seem to be highly complimentary. Everyone in?

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...
I think it is now time to seriously get back to work. I am back into my routine of up 'til 4-5 am, sleep in until noon or so. My body seems happy with me again. I have still been having bad dreams, but they are getting much better, if not 'good' yet. I have taken a bit of time to relax, watch movies, clean the house a little bit. I got to meet my new roommate last night, and she seems very nice. I am looking forward to spending the summer with her. She also has a fantastic summer job, in fact, what I would imagine as my ideal summer job. She gets to dress up in period costume and tell people about Canadian history, over at Fort Henry. Sadly, all the historic sites in Kingston are national historic sites, which requires a fluency in both official languages which I do not have. However, since my roommate is from Quebec, I hope that she will help me to improve my french over the summer. I have been watching "Blanche" in french again. I may try watching Blue, White and Red without subtitles, and see how that goes. I don't want to get too ambitious just yet. I still have to finish my last term paper. :)

Monday, April 28, 2003

By the way Jeremy, that marketing thing was brilliant. I laughed...just the break I needed. Thanks. :)
Apparently J didn't read my WARNING about using notepad as Blogger has a nasty habit of eating really brilliant long blog entries, particularly when you don't have the time to rewrite them. (But who wants to do that anyway). Well, I hope that now you will know what I was talking about. Is that you who commented on my Live Journal? Thanks. :) I will post there again soon, promise. I am in the throws of paper writing just now, and should not be making any appearances here...but you know...internet is tempting, and I am having a minor case of writers block. I should go read instead, so that I will be reinspired. :)
What has happened to Zelda? We miss you! I know you are busy with all your Calgary friends, but I personally would love to be able to read about all the fun you are having in the snow while I am trapped in the house writing my papers. Really, I just hope you are having a great time out there!

It has been a busy day, and sadly, not busy with school work, or at least, not nearly as much as I would have liked. But, what can one do? My fantastic roommies are leaving me. I couldn't go without some kind of roommie bonding before they depart. And, there was the big gathering at the prof's house, which we had to make a showing at. I hear that Zelda might be burried in snow out west! Yikes! I hope that it doesn't come here. Winter will never end in this country I swear! I have almost given up hoping for summer weather. The summer dresses and bathing suits have been taunting me from the shop windows for far too long now. I was thinking I could be wearing such things by now. Now I am convinced that this town will never warm up, and that a hot day will be 12 degress. Just wait, just for that it will be so hot I will not be able to work or sleep. Sigh. I can never win.

Considering what we have been studying in my class on Violence and the problems with the Hero Myth, I wonder just what this board game is all about....

Thursday, April 24, 2003

Last night I was listening to the CBC and heard an interview with one of the two British men who just broke the world record for high altitude ironing. I just found the news story on the internet and was reminded that I wanted to blog it. Mary Lou or Barbara, I forget who, was interviewing this guy, and asked him if he plugged in his iron...haha. I was thinking to myself that of course they would bring a battery opperated one up on Mt. Everest. No doubt with the cold tempurature it would take a while to warm up. But, it would seem that extreme ironing is not really about actually ironing, it is about the appearance of ironing, about 'pretend' ironing. It seems that the iron did not even get hot, and that the Union Jack, or what ever it was that they claimed to be ironing was not wrinkled, nor did it thus get *ironed*. Ask M's mother if she would call it ironing to run a cold iron over a piece of cloth. I think that the point of ironing is being missed here. Now I don't know about you, but I think they should only hold the world record for pretend ironing. I want to see someone really iron a flag on Mt. Everest! That would be a feat indeed.
Taking a little break, and what can I say, I had to do it.

You are red. You are impure, but noble. You are precious and true to yourself and others. When you love, you love entirely, and will do anything to make your love happy. You are sure of your identity, therefore, you cannot change others or be changed. You are a true prince, you may be forgotten, but without you, none of us could go on.

What inner color are you?

This was a cool one. I liked the images. But I must say, blue looked like some kind of orgy or something. Could be that I have been reading too much Bataille at this point. I don't know if it is just me, but it seems to be getting colder and colder in here. I am glad I have small rooms, as my little body heat does seem to make a difference. Ah well, back to the editing. :)

Well folks, just to confuse you, I have started up another sort of blog, which can be found here. I hope to write some of my more scholarly reflections there, and for now keep this as a more personal blog. Hey, lots of people have different blogs. It is all good. More sites I won't update nearly as often as so many of my friends. But, perhaps now I will have more incentive to write more often. Who knows. The best part about the other format is that people can comment...so please go and write your comments, I would love to hear them!

Tuesday, April 22, 2003

Well, I will give this a try and see how it goes. I had a great Easter Weekend back in Aurora and Waterloo. I saw many people which was great, but I didn't get to see anyone for nearly as long as I wanted to. Ah well. Can't have everything. Now I have to make up for all the work I neglected. But, as a nice surprise, while M and I were in GenX there was a nice box set of three of my favourite movies...Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Trois Couleurs". M was kind enough to buy it for me as a late birthday gift, and so I watched some of the extras this weekend. I hope to sit down and watch the movies again sometime when I do not have a pile of papers. For those of you who have not seen these movies, I highly recommend them. So, I went looking for webpages which might have something to say about them. (I find movies like this are always more interesting when you read up on them a bit. That is why I was happy to have all the extras on the DVD with all the scholarly interpretations, and the insights of the actors and actresses). So, here is one link which has some intersting stuff, on the trilogy and some other movies as well, like "The Cook, the Theif, His Wife and Her Lover". He even goes into a bit of the political commentary on Thatcher which the film is supposed to reflect. I really wish I could find a better explanation of that connection. I was too young to really grasp Thatcher when it was happening. But, that is for another entry. In the meantime, happy paper writing, and for those of you with free time, happy movie watching. :)

So, I guess you could say that all the ranting in the last couple of entries was really just to get out my frustrations with Blogger, who ate my wonderful intelligent entry, which is now lost in the ether forever. But really, things are not so bad as all that. I usually do not function in that head space. And if you think I am taking this all too seriously, lets just say it is a mockery of many things, on many levels.
But, in other news, I am currently awaiting drugs which should be delivered to my door. Not *those* kinds of drugs...silly. The kind which come from the pharmacy, which I cannot go to to get them myself because of the SARS scare. (He was a street person who did not have SARS, lighten up already). As many of you may know, here in Kingston the threat has not been much, unlike the big TO. But hey, I am not afraid to take the train to Toronto or anything. I just don't kiss everyone I see there. I have decided not to attend church downtown this Easter however. I usually make an annual visit to St. Mary Magdalene's in Toronto, one of my favourite churches anywhere, and I have been to many, I must say. Not this year I fear. Perhaps I will visit for Christmas to make up for it. Somehow the high holy seasons are that much richer at a church with lots of ritual tradition.
Hmm, I rushed home and they are not here yet. I was in such a hurry that I didn't even go get my stuff from the office. Not to say I don't have reading here to do. I suppose I should get to it. I am thinking of all you others out there working and reading. Keep on truckin' as they say. :)

Tuesday, April 15, 2003

Well, that is the end. Hope the strange backwards presentation didn't mess you up too much. For now...Over and Out.
DEATH: Back to the heavy for a sec, only a sec though. This is a really tough one, so we quickly bounce back to...
TITANIC: Wasn't this about a tragic event involving a lot of needless...DEATHS? But wait, they turned it into a horribly sappy romance, taking away any genuine impact that might have arisen from its being based on a real situation.
JERRY SPRINGER: One last taste of the ridiculous before we have to take on some serious stuff...lets see, I think this might have been intended as foreshadowing rape and suicide...not to make light of either of them, as Jerry Springer is want to do.
RAPE: What kind of opinion is one suppose to have about this? Is this supposed to foster discussion, like, "its ok as long as you are the conquerer in a war, but not if the people you conquer are white...one should only do this to women...? What was the point here?
SUICIDE: OK, here a little more debate, perhaps. But do they want reasons, methods, A discussion of its appearance in litterary and cultural texts? Ana Karenina vs. Javert say?
GOD: Ah, the big question in our 'secular' multicultural society, oh wait, this is an American quiz...so of course we are supposed to say "God Bless America" or something like that...so all American's believe in God right?
RAP:As a break from the previous heavy questions, we are now given a brief examination of several musical genres, and then return to more heavy material. So, for your commic relief, four not so trendy, (to some) musical questions are raised. Why does rap make it on the list? Most people find it annoying I suppose? Is that the basis for selection for all four? I think maybe.
MARILYN MANSON: I can't say to much about annoyance factor in this making the list. Perhpas it is about your opinion on rather course content, pushing the acceptible envelope, that must be it.
BOY BANDS: These are definitely on the list as a measure of annoyance factors.
CLASSICAL: This is either annoyance, or better yet, a measure of how traditionally "cultured" you are. Or if this goes too far, how snobbish you are.
ABORTION: Who should really be allowed opinions about this anyway? I say, at least half, (assuming those anwering are from the general population) the people answering this quiz really have no right to an opinion on this question.
TEENAGE SMOKING: Is this something up for debate? Wouldn't it be more interesting to ask about cigarette marketing to teenagers? Or, you know what I saw in the store today? Cigarette package covers, with trendy designs on them like happy faces, and earth wind fire, to cover up all those disturbing health warnings, for only $0.99. Now that is really disturbing.
EATING DISORDERS: Is this like when you spill on your lap and say..."oops, Just a little eating disorder"? I imagine the quiz writers had more serious matters in mind. All the starving women in the first world, who are often lumped in with the 'cutters'. Lump this in with the serious depressing questions...but wait...back to the fluff questions...
FAVORITE COLOURS: Note the missing 'u'here and elsewhere. First clue this is an American quiz. They are so self absorbed, and assume everyone who isn't American wishes they were. Ha!
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF... First of all I would like to question the things that are placed next to one another on this list to be given about equal condideration. Perhaps it would be more interesting if they were put together as pairs, say God/Marilyn Manson, or Suicide/Jerry Springer. Why are the serious with the mundane, over marketed pop culture?
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?: Idea indoctrinated by fairy tales, Disney films, and really, any romantic film in general, at least any of the Hollywood variety. Too bad no one tells you how to make love work for 50 or 70 years.
ABORTION: Who should really be allowed opinions about this anyway? I say, at least half, (assuming those anwering are from the general population) the people answering this quiz really have no right to an opinion on this question.
HOW LONG ARE YOU IN THE SHOWER?: Long enough to get clean, and enjoy the hot water and pressure most of the world only wishes they had, or doesn't even know the feel of. They say we can look forward to wars over water in the not too distant future, not just oil. Hurray!
WHAT'S YOUR FAV. PLACE TO GO ON VACATION?: Our First World idea of the division of work and leisure time... Not only the idea that we should have vaccation time, but that we are free to leave home, and go anywhere in the world we want, just to bumm around, preferably on a beach. Read Jamaica Kincaid, especially, "A Small Place". Very intersting perspective.
FAVORITE SCARY MOVIE: How did this get separated from the other movie stuff. Someone is not planning this quiz very carefully. Horror movies are just an excuse to perpetuate the idea of the victimization of women, and the entertainment value of violence, against women in particular. This different somewhat from the thriller, which is a cheap high on the adrenaline of fear.
GUYS WITH OR WITHOUT HATS?: The teenage male habit of baseball hats. You can tell when they start to grow up because you can see there hair just before it starts to disappear or turn grey.
SHOE SIZE: Is this supposed to be an indication of hight, or penis size, or is that hands... For women, smaller is always better, of course. (Feet I mean).
SIBLINGS: Yes, a very good idea. Everyone should have siblings. Not to say that more is better, but two or three is a great idea.
LAST CD YOU BOUGHT: Bought being an indication that it was worth putting good money down, rather than just copying it off whatever the current equivalent of Napster.
LAST MOVIE YOU SAW: Something artsy which most people will not have heard of, but which is far supperior to most of the dribble we are spoonfed by hollywood so often.
FAVORITE ACTOR: Because we are all supposed to be obsessed with movie stars, right? I once heard someone say, "when a society is forming, warriors are its heros. When I sociey is in its prime, scientists and inventors are its heros. When a society is in decline, entertainers are its heros."
WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?: Ah the power of naming. Adam names all the animals, but after that, the mothers take over. The women in the bible got to give their children their names, and that is just as it should be, I'd say. On this topic, I think that children should keep their mother's last name. I think they already do this in Quebec. Mothers do most, if not all the work anyway, before and after birth, so makes sense.
YOUR NICKNAME(s): The power of renaming. This makes me think of the scene in American Psycho when he hires the two escorts, and tells them their names when they arrive. Very disturbing.
Blogger ate, yes ATE my earlier entry which I spent valuable time typing out this morning. All you other bloggers beware! Write you entries in Note Pad first, then paste them here. So, disappointed that I could not post the brilliance I had here earlier, and not having the heart to try to type it out again, here is an entry I started working on a while back. If you ever saw the original quiz, you will know that I did not make it all the way through with my commentary, but here is what I did finish, for your entertainment. I personally find these quizes somewhat annoying most of the time. Who comes up with these questions anyway? Perhaps I will do the second half later. But first, I hope to redo the post I lost. Cursed Blogger... By the way, you will have to read the quiz 'bottom up' as I am posting it in pieces.
One more time....
Can you post this?!

Well, it has been quite the weekend. I must admit that I decided to take the weekend 'off' so to speak. Now those of you who are not graduate students may think to yourselves...but isn't that what weekend means? Time 'off' from weekday work? But, my friends, there is no rest for the wicked, and none for the graduate student either, at least, not without significant guilt. So, my weekend is over. Back to the grindstone tomorrow. But, there must have been something ill in the air on Saturday night. Someone must have been peeved that the time change was here and there is still snow on the ground. Can't say what it was, but there have been an undo number of break-ins this weekend very close to home, but not home, thank goodness! I think I must be off to bed for the night. But everyone should look forward to my new quiz...in the works. Had hoped to have the text down this evening, but it is not going to happen. I am also thinking of changing to LiveJournal. We will see how it works over there, how hard it is to post and make it look nice. Comments, that is what Blogger needs...comments. Ah well. Goodnight all!

Ok. So, here is my result from Zelda's Quiz...which was very fun let me tell you. But this must be the biggest picture of all the results she has! Wow! Compare this to say...Mike B. (Ok, I admit, I tried to see some of the other results). :)

Now that I have wasted so much time working on my quiz for today, perhaps I should go get some work done. However, I can easily see how these quiz things could become addictive, not just in taking them, but making them. Hmmm, the possibilities are endless...Well, wait and see. In the mean time...my stomach is calling me to feed it.
Here is my new quiz! Tell me what you get...:)

Another quiz, this one from Zelda! It has been a good weekend here in Kingston, except for the weather. However, grey skies are certainly more conducive to sleeping in long into the afternoon. (Contented sigh).

By the way...my glam rock name is "Golden Fantasy"...go figure that one out. :) What is yours...? (Hint...think Hed...then think Wig). :)
Today I made my very first venture into the KFPL. I regret that I did not go much sooner. I was highly impressed by the place. They had a decent religion section, for starters, but the best part was by far the movie section. They had some great stuff, not the least of which included "The Cook, the Theif, His Wife, and Her Lover", by Peter Greenaway, "8 1/2" and "Roma" by Fellini, and one of my favourite tv series, "Blanche" in the original french. They even have a DVD section, in which I was pleased to find a copy of "Tom Jones" (a period movie, not cheezy music, in case you are confused). But the crowning glory was that they had a copy of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on DVD. Now any library that has that in their movie collection clearly shows signs of inteligence and good taste. :)

I think I will dodge the 100 Things about Sumaarsita bullet for a little longer. Too much work over here. I had a great chat with my friend from Waterloo, S, about Aztec human sacrifice, (still beating hearts to keep the sun coming up each day) and all those kinds on interesting religious stuff that I study here in Kinston, (and which she just happens to be reading about too, in historical novel form). Speaking of which, I should really go and read more of my violence text book. Maybe later...:)
I had a great weekend at home with my parents before they leave for Australia, to visit my sister. But, by some strange coincidence, my sister had to be in Waterloo this week, so has come all the way from Australia for the week, will head back on Thursday or so, and my parents will leave on Friday, and meet her there. The modern world of travel is a very strange place. I find it disorienting enough to travel on the train/bus/subway/car between Kinston, Toronto, Aurora, and Waterloo. Stuff always ends up in the wrong place, and I never remember which bed I am waking up in. I couldn't deal with time zone changes. However, I tend to run on Australia time anyway, so I am hoping I will make the adjustment alright. :)

What Season Are You?

Saturday, March 01, 2003

It would seem that this must be divided into two entries. So, my next quote is from Michael Ondaatje's book "The English Patient". I am not sure how much intro to give this one. If you have seen the movie, you will know what I am saying. The main character Almasy has finally been able to return to the cave of swimmers where he has left his lover, Katherine, because she was injured after a plain crash in the desert. He has of course returned to late, but in such a dry place, she has not much altered. Katherine, throughout the course of their affair, was in the habit of injuring him, hitting him, cutting him and so on, (which is reflected in this passage). Strangely, the violence of Katherine, and the expression of eroticism even between dead and living here reminds me of things I am reading about a religion theorist Georges Bataille, but that is a scolarly tangent, for another time perhaps.

I approached her naked as I would have done in our South Cairo room, wanting to undress her, still wanting to love her. What is terrible in what I did? Don't we forgive everything of a lover? We forgive selfishness, desire, guile. As long as we are the motive for it. You can make love to a woman with a broken arm, or a woman with fever. She once sucked blood from a cut on my hand as I tasted and swallowed her menstrual blood. There are some European words you can never translate properly into language. Felhomaly. The dusk of graves. With the connotation of intimacy there between the dead and the living. Michael Ondaatje The English Patient

So, the next time you are with your loved one, be she female, remember just how erotic menstruation can be. Happy International Women's Week! :)

I know that International Women's week is coming up, and I have been thinking lately about a 'Celebration of Menstruation in Literature". Truth be told, I have only really come across two good quotes which describe menstral blood in an erotic way, but I am on the hunt to find more. If any of you out there know of any, and you know how to contact me...please pass them on. But, for those of you who are interested, I will include, (and hope I am not breeching any copyright rules) the two that I have found. They are by two of my favourite authors, one male, one female, both of whom have an incredibly sensual style of writing, yet each has a unique type of sensuality.

First, the woman, Jeanette Winterson. I think she is a great writer. I was introduced to her stuff in my first year English course, and have loved everything by her that I have read since. I am currently reading "Sexing the Cherry", which is really interesting and uplifting to read. (I was also reading Unless, so this book is, so far at least, in a much more positive frame of mind, as it were). My quote is from another book by her called "Written on the Body". The gender or the narrator is never revealed, which makes for an interesting read. The narrator has had relationships with both men and women, but the book focuses on a female beloved. The passage comes from a short chapter on "The Nose" as Winterson takes us through the different senses, and their experience of the beloved. I want to quote the whole thing, but I will refrain. You will get the idea.

From beyond the front door my nose is twitching, I can smell her coming down the hall towards me. She is a perfumier of sandalwood and hops. I want to uncork her. I want to push my head against the open wall of her loins. She is firm and ripe, a dark compound of sweet cattle straw and Madonna of Incense. She is frankincense and myrrh, bitter cousin smells of death and faith.
When she bleeds the smells I know change colour. There is iron in her soul on those days. She smells like a gun.
My lover is cocked and ready to fire. She has the scent of her prey on her. She consumes me when she comes in thin white smoke smelling of saltpetre. Shot against her all I want are the last wreaths of her desire that carry from the base of her to what doctors like to call the olfactory nerves. Jeanette Winterson, Written on teh Body

Last night I took in a great romantic film, Nicholas Nickleby. My only big complaint is that that costumes, (one of the main reasons I love to take in period films) were far less than satisfactory. At the conclusion of the movie, one of the wedding dresses actually had NO SLEEVES! On a Victorian dress?! Never. But, the romantic language of the film was heart melting. Once, when I was an innocent young girl, I used to believe that people could honestly feel that way about one another, even if they would not use such flowery language. Now, I have become synical. No such men exist in the world. At least, none that I have met. Yet another disappointment of grown up life I suppose. Where have all the romantics gone? Am I alone in this world? Sigh.

Yet another quiz...over here at ZeldaP's house, there is a party goin on. Yeah! :)

Tuesday, February 18, 2003

Here it is Tuesday night of Reading Week, and I have not accomplished near what I should have by now. There are too many other emotional things to deal with when ever I get a break and finally get to come home, what ever home is these days. Not here, not there. I had this terrible urge to bake today, but this is not my house, so I can't bake here. Which kind of ruins the whole vaccation thing. That isn't too much to ask is it? The sad part about it is that I am so torn. I want to go 'home' where I can bake, and be with my family. I miss them, and I like to think that they miss me too. However, I also want to be here. I want to go to this Ceili here on Saturday night, which is when I am supposed to be at home. Sigh. So, part of me wants to go home for a few days during the week, and come back here for Saturday, but how? Nothing ever works out. I can never have the best of both worlds. However, I must say, I have gotten quite a bit of good visiting in thus far. As much as can be expected for now, at least. I can't expect everything, right? It will all be over soon and Iwill be back to the drag again. Much too soon.

In the mean time I am taking in lots of movies. I want to go see Adaptation yet, which looks good. I liked "Being John Malcovitch" and am looking forward to this one. I did go to see "Heaven" as you will see noted above. This movie was very interesting to me. I really liked the Colours Trilogy, (Bleu, Blanc, and Rouge), and wonder how this movie might have turned out had Krzysztof Kieslowski directed it. It was a very artfully directed film, and I really liked that about it. However, it was quite a shock to see Kate Blanchet with a shaved head. (No she doesn't become a skin head or anything. She looks more like a Buddhist nun to me.) If you can, go see it. I am wondering about the nominated Best Foreign films for this year, and if I will be able to fit them in before Oscar time. We will see. Such a disappointment with Amelie last year. But that is another entry.
Ta.

It has been a lazy kind of weekend. One of those weekends where I don't leave the house, and do mundane house work, and lots of reading. It is grey and warming up outside. All the beautiful piles of crispy snow are sinking into pools of soggy slush. Why would I want to go out in that? But, perhaps today I will take a little trip downtown, just for some excercise, and to see some other human beings. Everyone else in my life is too busy for me today anyway. So, I will just have to entertain myself as I see fit. Lookout!

What Is Your Animal Personality?
brought to you by Quizilla

This one was fun, interesting. Why am I driven to do these tests lately? It is all Zelda's fault. :)

Thursday, January 30, 2003

My personality is rated 27.
What is yours?

I am not so sure about this test. Strong and weak personalities? What is that? I think the hermeneutics of suspicion applies here for sure....Other wise I thought is was a fairly good description.
27/50
Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest...Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over it if that trust is ever broken.

Sunday, January 26, 2003

Hello All! Well, I am now officially a full quarter century old. After a raucous weekend of partying with my parents, I am back in Kingston and must buckle down to work.

Tuesday, January 21, 2003

This has been quite the week for substance abuse in my life I must say. But, now that I have tried it, I can say that I truly know what I am saying when I say I don't want anything to do with the stuff. It all started when I had a cup of coffee in class last Monday. I hadn't had enough sleep the night before, granted, and most likely not enough to eat, but it gave me the shakes something aweful. I am one of those strange people who does not drink coffee. Working in a coffee shop for three year will either make you addicted, or make you never want to consumer or even smell coffee again. I am in the latter category. However, in extreme circumstances, presented with good coffee and nothing else of sustenance, I may, (but not always), break down and have some from time to time. It has been known to happen. Now, given that I do not much partake of coffee, other more "sinful" substances are naturally not part of my usual routine either. That is, I don't smoke, I don't drink alcohol, and I don't do any form of drugs, besides say iron supplements, which counts I know, but, different category. Well, cigarettes having no appeal, I left them off the list. I have never been enticed even to puff one. Yuck! I did smoke something else, which had me coughing and weezing as I am sure you could imagine. My poor virgin lungs. However, for the first time, this kind of smoking had an effect on me, and it was certainly a learning experience, but I think I will wait a while before trying that again. Then, on the weekend, I also decided to have a couple of drinks at the bar. Now, normally I have no qualms about hanging at the bar and drinking pop, or juice, while everyone else partakes of their beer. I still won't drink beer. Yuck. But, I will drink girly drinks, (reason #146 why it is good to be female) and so on Saturday I had two. Then, today in class, I had had no food, and there was that coffee again. So, foolishly I drank some. I had the gitters very bad, I can't even tell you. So bad, I was even rude to one of my beloved co-students. She seems to have forgiven me, for which I am very grateful. But I realize that I just don't like myself on these terrible substances. So, I have had my week of adventure. Now it is time to go back to my wholesome routine once again. :)

Saturday, January 18, 2003

Well, this has been a week of firsts. Today I participated in my first Public Politcal Protest, a long with thousands of other Canadians, and many across the world, it would seem. It certainly was cold, the article was not lying. We were outside marching around or listening to speaches for nearly 3 hours, in -14C windchill weather. We were very cold by the end, let me tell you. My hands took a while to regain normal functioning. But, it felt good to be out there with so many likeminded people, making a statement of solidarity with so many others. Power to the People!
Part of me feels like this is what university life is really about. I am getting involved here in Kingston, in ways that I never did at Laurier. Part of me thinks between the business students and the engineering students, Waterloo was a more conservative town, but I know that is not true. I just wasn't involved in the ways I am here. I have run into some really great people here, and I am so glad I came. This is turning out to be a great university experience for me. Who would think, with five years of university under my belt, that I would have so much more to discover here in Kingston. But there is always more to discover my friends. :)

Tuesday, January 07, 2003

I am currently working on my essay...no really...and I have been listening to my new Michael Nyman CD, much thanks to a wonderfully attentive M, who found it for me. One of the songs on it, called "If", I really like, which is saying something, because really I like them all. I thought that it was from "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover", but in fact it is not. It is from a Japanese animated version of "The Diary of Anne Frank", which I would now love to hunt up, if possible. Gen X here I come, whenever I am back in Waterloo. I found the lyrics here, and they are moving, especially considering the context. The second song, "Why" also looks good. I wish I could hear it. The liner notes read "Roger Pulvers wrote two texts which demanded the only genuine songs I have written for film..." Perhaps that is why I was so moved.

Sunday, January 05, 2003

Well, I think today has been a record day in terms of procrastination. I have one paper to write, which has been hanging over my head the entire holiday. I have all my research from the library in very expensive photocopies, many of which I have even read. i just keep reading more and more, underlining the important stuff in pencil, writing my snide comments in the margins. I have attempted to start writing. I have about one single spaced page. I am not ready to write somehow. I can't concentrate, I can't sit still. This morning I had a good excuse. No food in the house, and a car in the driveway, it was my duty to go grocery shopping, which I did. Then I came home, put the groceries in the kitchen, (but not away, in the fridge) and attempted to contact my older sister, who was no doubt wanting the car back. In the process of contacting my sister, I started chatting to M on trillian, which distracted me for a while. Then, I finally got back downstairs to put away the groceries, and had to clean out the fridge. Then my sister arrived, and we had to say our long good-byes. This is likely the last I will see of her for several months. Once she was off, with her Aussie boyfriend in tow, I had to settle down, get some work done. I think it may have been in here that I got the one page typed. Then I went to make some lunch, more fridge cleaning. Then when I came back upstairs I had to organize my email inbox, and then take a little cat nap, and then do more email, and then make dinner, and then talk on the phone, and more talking on the phone, and now blogging. Well, it has been a busy day, I must say.
I am not usually like this. I am usually more disciplined. So what is wrong with me eh? Well, I haven't resorted to masturbating yet...maybe later. I think I am inhibited by guilt. There is no way this paper will be as good as I need it to be, so I just can't get started. Is that it? I could blame it on anemia, tired, unable to concentrate, but that isn't entirely fair either. I have been awake for hours, I just haven't been writing. Sigh. I am dying to know how I did on the papers I did hand in. Maybe that will give me hope that this one will be ok too. I need to pull my socks up. Get down to work. I will have something decent started before I go to bed tonight. That is it.
In other news, actually, I have no idea what is going on in the news. I know Iraq is about to get it, but not from watching the news. This holiday, I have been blissfully cut off from the real world. But tomorrow, I will wake up to my alarm, and the wonderful CBC will bring me back up to speed on the current events of the nation and the world. Holiday is over, as of tomorrow. Maybe that is the kick in the pants I need. :)
